About Jenifer Thoem

I create large-scale, site-specific ceramic wall installations that use light, repetition, depth, and space to blur the lines between 2-D and 3-D art. My work is driven by a need to find connection to a memory, a person, the viewer, and ultimately myself. A personal connection to a body of work that demands repetition verging on insanity. I create under the belief that less is NOT more and the whole IS greater than the sum of its parts. Though the simple shapes I use in my installations are rooted in my own personal stories, my hope is that they will resonate with the space, offering the viewer a chance to find their own meaning and beauty. My work is entirely hand-built without molds, using white earthenware clay and finished using the Mishima technique- applying underglaze and wiping it away to highlight the texture. Details are drawn into the clay using dental tools and stamps made from the soles of my adult childrens’ shoes, collected since they were toddlers.
