About Diana Friend
I turn my bowls with solar power on a remote island in the Pacific Northwest. My interests lie in complex bark, burl, and intense grain. Cracks and voids are a further draw. These elements are the design cues I follow to create each piece. As the wood lathe spins, the joys of exploration guide my final forms. Occasionally, these delightful imperfections are preserved by carefully placed hardwood ties; adding a discreet elegance. I encourage those who see my bowls to pick them up and feel the lightness. When held in ones hands; gentle curves and soft finishes are the final reward. Surprisingly, most of my wood is found. It may be bound for the city landfill or lying on the forest floor. I create the work on my own from the first chainsaw cut to the final finish.
