About Jody Meredith

The first boiled wool item I saw was a pair of light gray mittens from Norway. They were beautiful, thick, and warm. The material I discovered that day has held my interest for 40 years and has evolved into the work you see today. Boiled wool is knit first, then shrunk by washing. It is similar to felting in that the protein scales of the wool interlock, but different because the resulting fabric has an alternate structure and more ability to drape. I make the fabric using a hand powered knitting machine and the finest quality wool or alpaca, then shrink the fabric and cut and sew it into garments.  Objects that combine utility and beauty have always mattered to me, whether it is a tool that balances in the hand, a bowl that brings pleasure to use, or a jacket that provides both warmth and delight.
