About Amy Smith

I weave wearable watercolors. I live on an island in Maine and study the tides, twilights, and wind. I bring their colors and motion to my loom and weave them into flowing garments. All my pieces include subtle and exciting color gradations, accomplished by choosing the warp colors one thread at a time, the result of careful study and joyful improvisation. The warping reel is a place of ingenuity and delight for me. Many of my designs are lace because lace allows me to weave with light, to incorporate lace’s negative spaces into my designs. I weave exclusively in eucalyptus-based tencel because it is an eco-friendly fiber and has lovely luster and drape. I work on an 8-shaft uncomputerized floor loom, creating fine wearables for any gender, any time, in any light.
