About Betsy Giberson

Starting with undyed silk and linen, I cut rectangles and serge the edges. All my pieces are geometrically constructed.

I am intrigued by the challenge of combining the organic lines of the human body with the straight edge lines of geometry. And as an extra perk, this approach creates no waste.

The next step is to dye the base color. I formulate my dye recipes so that I can get the color and tones that I want.

Then I over-dye to create the markings and patterns on the cloth. I use shape-resist techniques for this step.

The cloth becomes my canvas the designs I make are my drawings.

Finally I sew. Sewing my pieces myself is important to me. It creates an intimate relationship between me and my work. Its when the new ideas emerge.
