About Justin Teilhet
My latest body of work consists of framed compositions created from tens of thousands of fired ceramic elements. I start with a variety of types of clay including porcelain and stoneware. Using hand building and mechanical techniques, including extruding and slab rolling, I create parts in heavy repetition. The parts have consistencies, and variations in size, shape, etc. I use clay in several colors along with underglazes and dry pigments to create complementary surfaces. After firing, the individual ceramic pieces are categorized by size and shape. They are then assembled creating original compositions based on my preliminary drawings. I have also incorporated acrylics to accentuate the color palette. Some of the newest work is carved in relief, then sliced into strips which are sharpened and reassembled into the final composition.
