About Lori Katz
I am intrigued by contrast, the play of dark against light, the pull of empty space against the inclination to fill it up, the placement of line and mark, balance.
I work primarily in clay, embracing and pushing its limitations and perceived fragility, taking it beyond its traditional realm of function, making work that is a visual and tactile exploration of the medium. Elementally, my work is simple: lines, marks, texture. Increasingly my pieces include wire and the occasional found object. I strive to create work that embodies and builds connection, literal and metaphorical.
I work in sets. Sometimes I work with the idea of a group from the moment I get into the studio each morning. Other times individual pieces become a group as I consider the balance and relationship of one component to another.
