About David Gootnick
I am trained as a luthier and cabinetmaker, but my recent work explores kumiko, a Japanese woodworking technique. Kumiko uses narrow pieces of wood to create intricate geometric patterns. My compositions are made of hundreds, in many cases more than a thousand individual pieces of wood, each crafted to a tolerance of roughly 0.05mm. There are very few artists working in this tradition in North America. Through my work I hope to create a vivid visual experience and to add my voice to this ancient art form.
