About Michael Mikula
Glass is a superbly moldable material. Working directly and intuitively, I design and build complex graphite molds to cast or press imagery and structure into glass. Contemplations on architecture is the starting point, reinterpreting form and detail, from ancient structures through 20th century. I play with the material's ability to refract light and color. Each segment is individually cast, blown, cut and polished. The smoothness of the exposed interior surface contrasts with the deeply textured cast exterior, creating multiple views into the depth of the form. Each composition is a play on positive/negative space, shadow and light.
