THE LOUISE K. BINSWANGER PRIZE FOR BEST ARTIST NEW TO THE SHOW

This body of work is made using the ancient batik resist process of wax and dye on silk habotai fabric. Some surfaces are created with brushes, others with non-traditional tools I find around my home like lipstick applicators and socks. Although silk appears delicate, it is very strong, with a tensile strength that allows it to withstand great pressure. Much like the prevailing qualities of femininity, I’m interested in both the softness silk presents, as well as its ability to hold it together under pressure.
