I create one-of-a-kind and small groupings of sculptural vessels that explore the meeting point between the natural and man-made worlds. The forms integrate these divergent sensibilities into a composed landscape, such as a stand of bamboo-like, truncated cylinders, perforated with windows to look like corroded skyscrapers, or a simple form such as a sphere, marked on its surface with an off-center, wandering imprint, like bird tracks in the sand. As creative expressions of form, movement and texture, my work embodies a modern, minimal aesthetic while reminding one of a natural or ancient object exposed to the rigors of time.

Lauren Herzak-Bauman

Lakewood, OH

I make sculptures and installations that examine materiality and production in relation to my evolving relationship with porcelain clay. Referencing material from encounters within abandoned and derelict spaces, I arrange handmade multiples in a methodical and repetitive manner, creating a mass of material pile-ups. The physicality of the clay I use—its strength, fragility, pure whiteness, and translucency—becomes a metaphor for the human condition. I am curious about the relationship between the objects I make and my own perceptions of control, particularly how porcelain’s capabilities to warp, bend, crack, and break reveal the human nature of the work and the error my hands impart.

Ryan Greenheck

Philadelphia, PA

A structured composition is vital within the framework of my vessels. The rim and feet of my pots are strongly defined areas, while the space in between lends itself to be broken down in parts. I incorporate a repeated pattern over the surface to assist in accentuating the volume within the forms. The surface of my vessels is constantly explored. Sensitivity in the glazing process must be attained in order to preserve the essence of the piece.

Delores Fortuna

Galena, IL

Forming function, a dance, often a tug of war, between thought and object making. Add to this dialogue the sheer joy of working with clay as materially responsive as porcelain and surfaces only possible through glaze fusion. My work uses basic wheel thrown shapes as starting points, altering and rejoining forms articulated by black slip inlay. The clays and glazes I use are often of my own formulation. My glazes are food safe, microwave and dishwashing stable.

Teresa Chang

Functional craft brings great satisfaction and beauty to everyday life. As a practical person who loves food and clay, my passion for tableware is natural. For me, there is something inherently beautiful about forms pared down to their structural essence. In my work there is no applied decoration, no excess in shape, mass, or profile. I credit many influences for my design sensibilities: early Korean and Japanese pottery, my architectural studies, and an appreciation for simplicity instilled by my mother.

Exploring form and texture as they interplay with light is the current focus of my work. I am finding the twists and turns of mobius forms and their energy particularly exciting. Using fine, high fired porcelain, I form each piece individually by hand building, pinching, and carving. I am trying to find simplicity and calm in an increasingly complex world.

Marvin Blackmore

Durango, CO

By 1989, pottery was Marvin’s medium of choice, being initially drawn to the pueblo-style carved pottery with gloss and matte black finishes, famously known in the Southwest as Black-on-Black pottery. In the mid 1990's he developed a two-tone technique by adding a layer of a colored clay slip and then carving exceptional detailed designs through the slip to the base color of the pot.

It’s rare that a first time exhibitor at the Philadelphia Museum of Art Craft Show takes home Best of Show. 2019 was one of those times. Meet Jenifer Thoem. With contemporary ceramic craft encompassing a fresh style and singular approach, Jenifer’s work pairs graceful design with creative installations. We enjoyed talking with Jenifer about her experience at the show as well as creating her unique contemporary craft.
