Carving for me is a focused, intense, meditative and timeless activity. It is a conversation without words and structure between my mind, my hands, and the tools and wood, done slowly, with intention. Using hand tools allows my mind to focus on the actions of the moment as well as to think ahead to what next needs to be done and with which tools. The natural world around my home is the resource for my subjects and compositions. Brooches and pendants are an explorative evolution from the small-scale, palm-sized sculptures and netsuke that I have been carving for many years.
