Ann Brauer

Shelburne Falls, MA

I am a painter in fabric. Using commercially available fabric, my 1965 sewing machine, and the simplest of techniques, I create shapes of the imagination. Some of these are flames that capture the light with so many colors that stretch into the sky. Others are circles that hover above the horizon telling a story that cannot be put into words. At once simple and also amazingly complex these quilts remind us of the traditions of sewing while also stretching it into the 21st century with a spontaneity and sureness of practice. I then define the quilt by intensely over-stitching which creates a substance and texture that unifies the piece.
